Terms of use

Last updated November 5, 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and Mardini Labs ("we", "us") for using Spoken Spelling Bee ("the app"). By downloading or using the app, you agree to them. Please also read the privacy policy.

In short

1. Your licence to use the app

We give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use the app on devices you own or control, for learning at home, at school or on your own.

If you got the app from Apple's App Store, your licence is also governed by Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the "Standard EULA"). If you got it from Google Play, the Google Play Terms of Service also apply. If these terms and the store's terms disagree, the store's terms win for the licence itself. We, not Apple or Google, are responsible for the app and its support.

2. Who can use it

Anyone can use the app. If you're under the age at which you can agree to these terms where you live, a parent or guardian must agree to them for you and decide which purchases are made.

The app asks the year you were born when it first opens. For anyone under 13 it uses a child's setup with no AI features, and keeps purchases and other grown-up settings behind a question for an adult. Parents are responsible for how their children use the app and for any purchase they approve.

3. The free daily bee

The free app plays one bee a day: ten words, with the premium voice for words that come with the app. To give the free bee the premium voice, the app proves to our server that it's the genuine app from the store (see the privacy policy). A modified or unofficial copy of the app gets the phone's voice.

4. The full app

The full app is a one-time in-app purchase, $4.99 in the US or the price shown in your store. It opens unlimited bees and the premium voice for every word and sentence that comes with the app. It doesn't expire.

On iPhone and iPad it can be shared through Family Sharing. Google Play doesn't share in-app purchases between family members.

5. The subscription

The subscription is an auto-renewing in-app purchase, offered monthly ($2.99 in the US) and yearly ($14.99 in the US), or at the price shown in your store. It includes everything in the full app, plus:

These come with monthly allowances, which the app shows before you subscribe and while you're subscribed.

6. Refunds and restoring

Apple and Google take the payment, so refunds are handled by them under their policies: on iPhone and iPad at reportaproblem.apple.com, and on Android through your Google Play order history. We can't issue refunds ourselves. Nothing in these terms takes away refund rights you have under the law where you live.

To get your purchases back on a new device, use Restore in the app, signed in to the store with the same Apple ID or Google account. Purchases don't carry between iPhone and Android.

7. Allowances and fair use

The premium voice and the AI features cost us money each time they're used, so they come with limits: ten free words a day, the subscription's monthly allowances, and rate limits well above normal use. If our service is busy, over its own daily budget or unavailable, the app reads words with the phone's own voice and the AI features may wait until later. Unused allowances don't carry over to the next month.

8. AI features

AI word lists and meanings are written by AI models from other companies (see the privacy policy). They can be wrong, misspelled or unsuitable, even though the app filters them. Check an AI list before giving it to a child; in the grown-ups area you can remove any word before saving. Don't type personal information, such as someone's full name, into an AI topic.

9. The premium voice

The premium voice is computer-generated speech, not a recording of a person. It can mispronounce a word, especially names and rare words. The phone's own voice is provided by Apple or Google.

10. Your words and files

Words, lists and deck files you add stay yours. You let us process them only as needed to provide the features you use, such as making the premium voice for them. Only add material you have the right to use.

11. Word data and other content

The app includes word lists, a dictionary and example sentences from open sources, used under their licences, which are listed in the app under Settings > Word data and licences and, with the full licence texts and the notices for the open-source software in the app, at spokenspellingbee.com/licences.html. The topic lists for children were written for the app with AI and checked by a second AI pass; they can still contain mistakes, so please tell us about any word that doesn't belong. Everything else in the app, including its design, mascot, sounds and voice clips, belongs to us or our licensors.

12. What you may not do

13. Changes to the app and these terms

We improve the app over time and may change or remove features. We won't take away the full app's core, the unlimited bees on your phone, from people who bought it. If we change these terms, we'll update the date at the top, and for a change that matters we'll tell you in the app first. If you keep using the app after a change, the new terms apply.

14. Warranty and liability

We work to make the app useful and reliable, but it's provided "as is". We can't promise it will always be available or free of mistakes, that spelling aloud will hear every letter correctly, or that every meaning is right.

As far as the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid for the app and the subscription in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't be limited by law, or your rights as a consumer where you live.

If you got the app from the App Store: Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for it; if the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price, and Apple has no other warranty obligation to the extent the law allows. We, not Apple, are responsible for any claims about the app, including product liability claims, claims that it fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, consumer protection and privacy claims, and claims that it infringes someone's intellectual property. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.

15. Ending

You can stop using the app at any time by deleting it. Cancel a subscription in your store account; deleting the app doesn't cancel it. We may suspend access to our server for anyone who breaks section 12.
