To help us answer quickly, tell us your phone or tablet model, its system version, the app version, and what happened. For a word that's spelled, marked or spoken wrongly, include the word and its language.

Getting started

Do I need an account?

No. Nobody signs in. Your lists and scores are kept on your phone, and purchases belong to your Apple ID or Google account.

Which devices does it work on?

iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 15.5 or later, and Android phones and tablets.

How does a bee work?

Open a list and start a bee. For each word, press the speaker to hear it, then type it or say its letters. Meaning and In a sentence help with a hard word.

After you check, right letters go green and wrong ones pink, with the right letters underneath and a sentence saying what went wrong. At the end you see every word, and can practise the ones you missed.

How do I make a word list?

On the home screen, tap New list and choose where the words come from:

  • type or paste your own words, or find them with Find a word to add
  • a ready-made list, such as Dolch sight words or a level of common words
  • a topic list for children, such as Animals or Food, in three levels
  • a SpokenCards (.scdeck) or Anki (.apkg) deck file
  • AI, from a topic you name (with the subscription)

A long list can be split into parts, or you can copy chosen words into a new list.

How do I change the app's language, or the language I spell in?

Settings > App language changes the app's screens. Each list has its own spelling language, and Settings sets the language for new lists. Switching to or from Arabic, Persian, Urdu or Hebrew restarts the app once to turn the layout around.

Spelling aloud

How do I spell a word out loud?

During a bee, tap Say the letters instead, wait for the blip, then say the name of each letter, one at a time, as you would in a spelling bee. You can switch back to typing at any time.

The app doesn't hear me

First check that the app may use the microphone:

  • iPhone and iPad: Settings > Spoken Spelling Bee > Microphone
  • Android: Settings > Apps > Spoken Spelling Bee > Permissions > Microphone

Then try a quieter place, hold the phone closer, and say the letters a little more slowly, with a short pause between them. If a letter is still misheard, type that word instead, and let us know which letters and language gave trouble.

Is my voice recorded or sent anywhere?

No. The letters you say are worked out on your phone, and the sound is then discarded. It's never sent to us or anyone else. The privacy policy has the details.

Voices and sound

Why does the voice sometimes sound different?

The app has two voices. The premium voice reads words that come with the app (in the free daily bee and with the full app) and, with the subscription, your own words. It's a computer-generated voice that needs an internet connection the first time each word is played.

When you're offline, when the day's free words are used up, or when our service is busy, the app reads the word with your phone's own voice instead.

I can't hear anything

Turn up the media volume, and on iPhone check that silent mode is off. If you use Bluetooth headphones, check that they're connected. On Android, if no word is ever spoken, make sure a text-to-speech engine is installed and turned on in Settings > Accessibility > Text-to-speech output.

A word is pronounced or spelled wrongly

Email us the word, its language and the list it was in, and we'll fix it in a future update.

Purchases and the subscription

What's free, and what costs money?

The app is free to download and plays one bee of ten words a day. The full app is a one-time purchase that opens unlimited bees and the premium voice for every word that comes with the app. The subscription adds the premium voice for your own words, and AI word lists and meanings. The prices are on the home page.

How do I restore my purchase on a new phone?

Sign in to the store with the same Apple ID or Google account you bought with, open the app, and tap Restore purchase in Settings. In a child's setup, it's in Settings > Grown-ups.

Purchases stay with the store they were made in, so a purchase on iPhone doesn't carry over to Android, or the other way round.

Can my family share one purchase?

On iPhone and iPad, yes: the full app and the subscription both work with Family Sharing, for up to six people. Turn on purchase sharing in Family Sharing, then tap Restore purchase on each device. Google Play doesn't share in-app purchases between family members, so on Android each Google account needs its own purchase.

How do I cancel the subscription?

On iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open Settings and tap your name.
  2. Tap Subscriptions, then Spoken Spelling Bee.
  3. Tap Cancel Subscription.

On Android:

  1. Open the Google Play Store app and tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  3. Choose Spoken Spelling Bee and tap Cancel subscription.

Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date. You keep the subscription until the end of the period you've paid for. Deleting the app doesn't cancel it.

How do I get a refund?

Apple and Google handle payments, so they handle refunds too. On iPhone and iPad, request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. On Android, open your order history in Google Play and choose Request a refund, or follow Google Play's refund help. We can't issue refunds ourselves, but we're happy to help if something went wrong.

What are the subscription's monthly allowances?

The premium voice for your own words and the AI features cost us money each time they're used, so the subscription includes a monthly amount of each. The app shows them before you subscribe, and shows what's left on the AI and import screens. They start again each month.

Families and the grown-ups area

What is the child's setup?

When the app first opens, it asks the year you were born. For anyone under 13, or anyone who answers "I'm not sure", it turns off the AI features, keeps everything the child types on the phone, and puts purchases, imports, links out of the app and the age answer behind a question for a grown-up.

How do I open the grown-ups area?

In Settings, tap Grown-ups and answer the question. It stays open for five minutes. From there you can buy or restore, import a file, make a list for your child, and change who uses this phone.

Does a list I make for my child have the premium voice?

Yes, with the full app. When you save a list in the grown-ups area, the app fetches the premium voice for its words and sentences and keeps it on the phone, so your child's bee plays it without sending anything, even offline. Words that don't come with the app need the subscription for the premium voice; the list shows how many, and those words use the phone's own voice.

The age on this phone is wrong. How do I change it?

Open the grown-ups area and tap Who uses this phone.

My child wants to buy something

In a child's setup, the app never shows a price to the child. When the free bee is done, it asks them to find a grown-up. With Apple's Ask to Buy or Google's Family Link, a purchase from a child's account goes to the parent to approve.

Your data

What does the app send to your server?

Only what's needed to play the premium voice, check purchases and, for subscribers who allow it, make AI lists and meanings. Never your name, email, location or voice. The privacy policy lists exactly what is sent and to whom.

How do I delete my data?

Your lists, scores and settings are on your phone: delete a list in the app, or delete the app to remove everything. We don't hold your name or email, so there's no account to delete. To ask about anything on our server, email us and we'll help.

How do I turn off the AI features?

They're off until you allow them. To turn them off again, go to Settings and switch off AI help.
